On Being Wowed by the Timaeus

Plato’s Timaeus is a “creation” account, in which Timeaus of Locri tells Socrates and several others how the Demiurge, a semi-divine craftsman, formed the visible, changing universe by following an eternal model. From this dialogue, we know that Plato was a “creationist” who believed the universe is the product of intelligent design. From this dialogue, we can also see some of the fundamental assumptions undergirding Platonic philosophy as a whole, assumptions that are questionable in themselves and simply mistaken when examined with a critical theological eye. Christians through the centuries have been wowed by the metaphysics of the Timaeus. I can see the aesthetic appeal; everything fits so snugly. But it’s nearly all wrong, and Christians have been wowed only because they didn’t do what Robert Jenson taught us to do: Take the Bible and its narrative with full ontological seriousness.
