Contrary to self-congratulatory modern believe, women experienced a sharp reduction in power in the early stages of modernization. The change wasn’t their confinement to the household or the rise of brute patriarchy. Women had always been centered on the household, and men had always been publicly dominant. As Ivan Illich has detailed, the crucial modern shift was a drastic contraction in the social and economic scope of the household. After industrialization, men retained formal rights and authority. Women remained at home, but now ruled a shrunken domestic sphere. In a modern economy, the only way women can gain economic clout is by entering the workforce, where they are put into direct competition with men. By contrast, the supposedly oppressive gendered arrangement of peasant society afforded women their own spheres of action and forms of power, and so defused the battle of the sexes before it began.
